1) Courier

A courier company makes the most sense if you are new to importing lightweight, small items in bulk. Some of your top options are TNT, DHL, UPS, FedEx. With these options you are paying based on the weight. You get your item faster and can track them. DHL is a great option and your package comes to your doorstep. 5 business days for your package is the average norm. If you Live in the States, that could be 3-5 days.

2) Regular Post

China Mail

Mainly used for samples, can take up to a month a half. With my experience using this I did have any online tracking. I wasn’t paying much so it didn’t bother me. And I didn’t mind the wait. Your items could possibly be stolen, so be prepared to take the risk. Oh how we love that good old China Mail.

3) Air Freight

Shipping times vary depending on the company you are dealing with. The general time range is between 5 to 10 days. The costs are usually lower but you have do put in a little effort to make sure you get your package. Usually if you are not going through a freight forwarding service you will have to have to handle documentation and customs clearance. Dealing with courier companies, you don’t have to worry about this.  With Air Freight costs will be significantly lower than with courier companies, but extra work is involved when the goods arrive in your destination country

Air freight is quick and reliable in have light weight shipment that can be packaged easily. When start shipping kettle bells, you may have to start considering other options like Sea Freight.

4) Sea Freight

Shipping car parts, engines, kitchen counter tops? Sea freight is where you want to go. This is the most popular shipping method but takes a while to get to you. With this option you have to also take care of all the documentation unless you go through a freight forwarding service. This is the most popular shipping method used by big companies to import goods from China. The cost per kilo can be from 150 – 200 dollars. You can share a container with someone else. Shipping time take 1 month to 45 days.

If you go through a freight forwarding company you will mostly likely get FOB pricing. So they forwarder will pay up until the ship is loaded. When it reaches you country you are responsible for

  • Clearance fees
  • Port fees
  • Dockung fees
  • Etc

Calculate these options before you order anything. If you are bootstrapping you may not have an extra 2-300 dollars for these fees.
